Cavalry

Capture unjust racial experiences

iOS Mobile App

Introduction

Cavalry is an app developed in response to the ongoing issues of police violence, misconduct, and black racial injustice. The app was designed to give citizens the tools they need to interact safely and legally with law enforcement and provides an easy way to report and rate police interactions.Cavalry comes from the idea that we all have a duty to protect and look out for one another. In times of chaos and unfamiliarity, we need backup. We need the Cavalry.

Role - Design Director

We wanted to provide a safe and easy way for the Black community to stay safe and have the proper resources to protect each other.

Black Americans account for less than 13% of the U.S. population, but the rate at which they are shot and killed by police is more than twice as high as the rate for white Americans. We are all more aware than ever of the state of race relations and police brutality and the lack of accountability for police misconduct. Without easy access to affordable legal aid and a safe way to document incidents, many cases of police misconduct go unreported and unpunished.

The mission of the Cavalry app is to promote safety and equality by bridging the relationships between civilians and law enforcement.

Our app aims to empower both parties with tools that foster knowledge and accountability. I worked closely with the Cavalry team and the engineers to design the functionality and create the interactive prototype. I constantly got feedback throughout the process and established our company branding and web presence to align with our vision.

I was the project's Design Director; in my role, I supervised the design process and essential technical decisions. Designed the overall branding and created the interactive prototype. I learned so much from my colleagues throughout the design process, from the stories they shared about their experiences with being stopped or pulled over by the police and how there were moments they wished there had been an easy way to let friends and family know what was going on.

Several times I tested the prototype with various users, and the main things I learned were that the app needed an even more straightforward way to get started and begin capturing an incident. I added a way for users to start recording and create an account later in the process. I researched methods of leveraging built-in mobile features like voice-driven actions like Siri, shortcuts, and widgets to create a quicker way to access the core feature.

We utilized social media marketing initiatives to raise awareness about the app, engage users, and seek their support.

I created a social media aesthetic to align with our branding; we utilized social media marketing initiatives to raise awareness about the app, engage users, and seek their support. We raised some seed funding from investors and pitched our idea at events. We are now in the process of developing and testing the app. We are also in conversations with several interested legal partners who look forward to providing legal support to our users. Cavalry aims to provide citizens with the tools they need to encounter the police safely and confidently.
